How Serie B Works
The second league division in Italy became officially known as Serie B in 1929 after different versions of it existed between 1904 and then. Currently, Serie B consists of 22 teams which result in 42 games played each year by competing teams. A team will play each team once in the first half of the season and then will play each team one more time in the second half of the season. The only difference being the second match up will be held on the ground of the team who played away in the first encounter. Italian football is governed by UEFA (as is all of the European football competitions). Teams that participate in Serie B also take part in the Coppa Italia which is the national annual professional soccer cup competition in Italy. Therefore it is feasible for a Serie B team to gain entry to European competition, namely the UEFA Europa League as the winners of Coppa Italia gain automatic qualification. Each year, there are three teams that are promoted to the premier league, Serie A and four teams are relegated to division 3 which is called Serie C. There are some strange rules regarding which teams get promoted compared to other leagues like the English Championship which has more straightforward rules. The top two teams in Serie B get promoted automatically to Serie A. If the third team in Serie B finishes 10 or more points ahead of 4th position it also qualifies automatically for Serie A. If it doesn’t have the large 10 point margin, then between 2 and 6 teams who are within 14 points of the third placed team are added to the playoff tournament. The final two rounds of this playoff are held over two legs, but the games before this are just a one off game held at the team who secured the highest league finishing position. The other strange thing we noted was that in the case of a tied game, extra time is played and if still tied after the 30 minute period, the team with the higher league standings is deemed the winner. Therefore, no such thing as a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner which can be a cruel way to decide who gets promoted. Regarding relegation rules, it is complex but not as complex as the promotion rules. The bottom three teams are automatically relegated. If the 18th placed team is 5 points or more ahead of the 19th place team, then the 19th placed team will also be automatically relegated. If not a playoff (also more commonly called a playout) must proceed between the 18th and 19th placed team over two rounds (home and away). The winner based on the highest aggregate score stays in Serie B while the loser is relegated. If there is a tie, similar to the promotion playoff rule, the 18th place team stays in Serie B because of its higher initial league standing.
